Is TikTok the perfect platform for salons and beauty?

Show me a salon whose staff don’t enjoy a TikTok dance or an Insta reel? Friendly, personable and creative – salon staff are a content creation dream when it comes to social media and not just for showing those before and after shots either.

 
Consumers love to see a transformation, or a well executed nail trend, as much as the salon loves to show them off – if there was ever a platform ideal for salons and spa’s – TikTok is it.
 
The platform utilises short videos, mostly set to music, and the majority of TikTok users are young adults, who enjoy looking and feeling good. They are lively, and like to show their personalities, and their ‘look’ and experiences online in a fun way. If a salon is going to tackle TikTok, it’s important that your content reflects the audience. It’s very user friendly as an app, so don’t worry that you might not ‘get it’ when it comes to marketing your business. It’s an ideal app to show off the creativity of your creations, as well as the lively personality within your salon. If any of your staff are aspiring hair and beauty ‘stars’, then TikTok is the platform for them!
 
Compared to other social media platforms, you can expect a larger initial reach, views and likes. The growth of TikTok has been exponential since it launched 5 years ago, but it’s still relatively unchartered when it comes to algorithm restrictions for brands using it for marketing purposes. This of course can and will change at some point in the future, but for now its still very much somewhere you can expect to see higher views and engagement on your content efforts.
 
If you are considering getting started on TikTok for your salon or brand, here are some tips:
 
  • Length – videos of around 12 seconds tend to work the best.
  • Music wise, it’s no bad idea to repurpose the viral trending tunes for your own content, and make your own mark with the visuals. Trending songs will help you get more views.
  • Challenges – you know when you see content creators posting on the same theme/music/craze as other posters? That’s a ‘challenge’ and it one bandwagon we recommend jumping on. These trends do have a short shelf life but there is always a new one around the corner, leaving you with plenty of content ideas.
  • Analytics will work for you if you make your account ‘Pro’
  • Branding – I recommend branding your videos at the beginning and the end.
  • Patience – If you don’t see the reach you are looking for immediately, don’t consider removing any content – traction can come days or even weeks after posting
  • Add a voiceover or text overlay to your videos so fans can see exactly what it you are showing.
  • Feel like dancing? Great – but remember that TikTok is ideal for ‘show and tell’ like tiny tutorials, and it will build your salon’s credibility beyond dance trends and similar.
  • Process, transformation and creativity – these are three elements you should bring to your TikTok content planning.
  • Repost! TikTok videos are the perfect length to repurpose as Instagram stories, so don’t waste your latest content!
  • And lastly - make sure you share your location! Potential new clients need to know where you are.
